It seems as though the days of the only leaders in companies being managers is going by the wayside.  Not all managers are leaders… and not all leaders are managers.  Many top companies are starting to leverage this idea and are finding leaders at all levels of their hierarchy.

In order for corporations to move at the speed of today’s business, the old bureaucratic systems are being replaced with flatten organizations.  It is difficult for a business to move or change quickly if 95% of its workforce is used for nothing other than executing orders.  This leaves only a few top managers and executives to manage all of the growth and change an organization must endure to compete in today’s marketplace.

Leaders can be found at every level of every organization, and steps should be taken to identify those individuals who can fill those roles.  Many have described management as doing things right and leadership as doing the right things.  There are people at all levels of any company or corporation who know what the right things are, and who can effectively communicate those goals and visions to others.  Astute companies are taking advantage of those leaders and doing away with traditional hierarchies and vertical communication channels.

In every work setting there is a formal organization and an informal organization.  In many respects, the informal organization can be as strong, is not stronger, than the formal, bureaucratic hierarchy that is depicted in the organizational chart.    The informal organization has a lot to do with the social aspect of the business.  It may sound cliché to think that there are natural born leaders, but it is true.  There are people whose moral character and fortitude make them leaders that others will follow, regardless of their standing in the corporation.

These individuals can be a great asset to any organization, and their “power”, so to speak should be harnessed and used early on.  Truly, the biggest asset one company has over its competition is its people, and organizations that cultivate and encourage leaders will build a workforce that is far above that of the competition.

It is important that these natural leaders buy in to the goals and vision of the company.  They should be informed and involved individuals.   These charismatic individuals already have a following.  What’s more, they will cultivate other leaders from the ranks of those who follow him or her.  It is central, then, that these people are given all of the information they need to be proponents of the company’s vision and goals.

When there is shared vision throughout a company, it becomes much easier to grow and change as the market changes.  It becomes much quicker to adapt to the changes of the business world.  In an era where “he who changes quickest wins”, this is an integral part of a business strategy.  Ideas and information flow from all corners of the company, but there is also control and management of those ideas due to the shared vision.

It is important for organizations to seek out natural leaders as well as to cultivate leaders.  These people have the potential to change an entire company for the better.  Businesses do well when they leverage the power of the people within their own ranks.  People, truly, are the edge that a company needs to beat out the competition.
